Shhh, don’t tell anyone, it’s a secret!
Food and wine lovers, get out your pens and notebooks! The master chefs are airing tips, tricks, recipes and more at the 2015 Secret Festival at Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch from Thursday, 29 to Saturday, 31 October 2015.
Now in its fourth year, this culinary calendar highlight is part conference, part pop-up dinner series and part food bazaar, but on the whole it’s a food and wine celebration that explores the latest foodie trends and honours South Africa’s two heritage varietals, Chenin Blanc and Pinotage. Over the course of the weekend, serious foodlovers can indulge in a series of tantalising talks, presentations, secret dinners and exhibitions, and those just starting to delve into the wonderful world of good grub can visit the free Saturday market.
Do note: if you’re interested in attending the conference portion of this event, it’s essential you pre-purchase your ticket.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2015 SPIER SECRET FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL CONFERENCE
FOOD CONFERENCE: Food is no longer just a source of sustenance and survival, it is an art, designed to entice, intrigue and send you on a sensory adventure. This full-day conference (Friday, 30 October) sees both locally and globally lauded chefs, butchers, entrepreneurs and designers shed some light on topics like sustainable farming and practices, preservation, locally sourcing ingredients and so much more.
SECRET MARKET: A chance for gastronomes to indulge in a range of decadent dishes, the FREE and family-friendly Secret Market invites all those who couldn’t make it to the conference to a day of wining and dining on Saturday, 31 October from 9am to 3pm. Foodies can buy top-class, free-range and organic produce and goods from well-known producers, including Spier’s very own Eight Restaurant. Plus, the little ones can meet, greet and interact with the animals from the Adventure Farm Mobile Petting Zoo.
SECRET DINNERS: In the run up to the main event, a series of themed pop-up dinners will be hosted by well-known epicures, like the king of bacon Richard Bosman, insect eater Zayaan Khan and the maiden of micro-brewing Meghan Werner. Spots for dinners are limited and tickets are available via Quicket.co.za. Be warned – most of these events are already sold out!
