The pre-Rugby World Cup Springboks squad will go head-to-head with a strong World XV (or World 15) team on Saturday, 11 July 2015 at the DHL Newlands Stadium. The Boks’ first game of the 2015 season will kick-off at 5pm.
The World XV squad is made up of the top rugby players from the best teams around the world. This year’s team consists of six nations – South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, France, England and Samoa.
Five Boks will be donning the World XV jersey instead of the green and gold one for this international friendly match. Bakkies Botha, JJ Engelbrecht, Flip van der Merwe, Craig Burden and Gurthrö Steenkamp will join the 23-man squad which is coached by New Zealand’s Robbie Deans and France’s Bernard Laporte.
“As a coach you relish the chance to work with talented players and this World XV has the experience and quality to come together quickly and really test South Africa,” said Deans. “We know we will need to match the physicality and intensity, as well as the skill levels of one of the leading World Cup contenders (South Africa) and it’s a great challenge for myself, Bernard Laporte and the players to work on,” he added.
Springbok captain Jean de Villiers will hopefully lead South Africa in this upcoming showdown. De Villiers has been recovering from a knee injury he sustained last year, and is likely to get some playing time under his belt in this game. He is set to make a full comeback to the DHL Western Province team for the two Absa Currie Cup games happening in the two weeks after this match.
Last year, when the Boks faced the World XV team they managed to storm ahead with a 47-13 win at the DHL Newlands Stadium. Let’s hope the boys can make it a repeat performance this year.
