Best known for their award-winning, premier range of wine and elegant race horses, the Avontuur Wine Estate in Stellenbosch is offering guests the unique opportunity to experience the estate and all its wonders on a Self-Guided Farm Walk. Roam the grounds and you’re sure to happen upon some breathtaking locations and splendid scenery around the estate.

The walk start at Avontuur’s tasting room where the staff will assist with planning your hike (or stroll). Each guest gets a map of the route, which includes points of interest and what to look out for. From there you can walk through the winery’s vineyards, paddocks (there are about 100 horses on the farm), as well as historical sites such as the manor house and the Taberer family memorial bench.
These tours give visitors the chance to learn more about the farm’s celebrated wines and horses. The tour ends with a seasonal speciality tasting – think wine pairings with biltong, nougat, sweet treats and the ever-popular chocolate cup with a shot of Avontuur’s dessert wine, Above Royalty, at a minimal additional fee.

The duration of the walk is 30 to 45 minutes, with an extra 30 minutes for the tasting. It is advisable for walkers to be moderately fit and to wear comfortable shoes. Also, be sure to take a hat and sunblock on the walk for protection against the harsh African sun.
PRICE AND BOOKING FOR SELF-GUIDED FARM WALKS AT AVONTUUR WINE ESTATE
The total cost of the tour is R100/p, which includes the walk, the tasting and an illustrated map of the farm to take home. The tours are available daily (including weekends) from 9am to 4pm and includes a speciality tasting. Small groups are easily accommodated, but it is advisable that groups of five or more call ahead so arrangements are made before arrival
For more information about the Guided Farm Walk or to book your spot, contact Ella at winery@avontuurestate.co.za or on +27 (0)21 855 3450.
Tip: After your farm tour and wine pairing, why not head to the estate’s restaurant for a meal? All food is produced using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. The eatery is open daily for breakfast and lunch, while in season dinner is served from Wednesday to Saturday. For updates on opening hours, visit www.avontuureestate.co.za or call the estate directly.
NOTE: The farm walk is not suitable for wheelchair users. Kids are welcome, but remain the responsibility of their parents.
