Every Friday night the Jack Black stage is lit up with local talent
Rick’s Café Americain’s Weekly Lunch Specials
Pop over to the charming Casablanca-themed restaurant for a hearty meal that won’t break the bank
Much of Rick’s Café Americain’s aesthetic is modeled on the classic Hollywood film Casablanca, and it seems as though the so-called classic approach is also found in owner Per Menkö’s work ethic: he’s hands-on in creating the menu and he knows regulars by name.
So it comes as no surprise then that at the end of every week, Per takes the time to curate a unique menu for his customers. More specifically, the restaurateur puts together an ever-changing selection of discounted lunch options that only cost R69 per dish.
“Every week [the dishes] will change and there will be something different. It will be the best we can offer for R69,” says Per, who is a seasoned chef.
Available every Monday to Friday from 11am to 3pm, the special selection comprises fare pulled from the café’s Moroccan- and North African-influenced usual menu, as well as some new items that will, no doubt, be a pleasant surprise for regulars. Visitors can look forward to everything from Thai green curry and seafood pastas to tasty vegetarian burgers and roasted chicken; for each week’s inclusions, follow the @RicksCafeCT Twitter account.
Situated just off Cape Town’s hip-and-happening Kloof Street, the eatery is famed for its rooftop deck where guests can take in unparalleled views of Table Mountain. The interior is as impressive (and is super cosy) with its Moroccan-themed decorative elements and three (yes, three!) open fireplaces.
And when it comes to pairing the specially curated lunch with drinks, guests will have no problem doing so as the café boasts one of the most impressive beverage lists in the Mother City - all in all, there are over 500 different options. Think everything from colourful cocktails and rare gins to lagers and ales from around the world. And for those in the mood for something warm and toasty, there’s glühwein and hot chocolate, the latter of which is served with a decadent piece of Lindt chocolate.
Do take note that Rick’s also runs a happy hour special from 3pm to 7pm every day (even Saturday), so late-lunchers can make the most of the overlapping offers. As with many things, it is all about timing!
And so, to quote the famous film that inspired much of Rick’s Café’s aesthetic: “Round up the usual suspects” and head out for a hearty lunch.
