Plus markets, fun runs and youth-led conversations (June 16)
Theatre on The Bay situated in Camps bay brings you a brilliant and irreverent caper in anarchy, sex and education, the story outlines the path of eight British schoolboys as they strive for the brass rings of Oxford/Cambridge.
Despite the fine teaching by excellent professionals such as Mrs Lintott in History and the intellectually enthusiastic (albeit eccentric) Hector in General Studies, the Headmaster is not satisfied. He signs on a maverick young teacher Tom Irwin, whom he hopes will give the boys enough polish to fast-track them into the cloisters of the country’s most hallowed universities.
The new teacher is awkward but charismatic, and the boys' loyalties are divided between the old and the new. In this mix of intellectualism and creative spirit, which guides a rigorous preparation regime for that ultimate educational opportunity, the rambunctious students learn to see the world from a different perspective and to question preconceived notions – daring to speak out, question, challenge and discover themselves.
This theatre show in Cape Town is a story of the importance of freedom in education. An acknowledgment of the fact that knowledge is ever-growing and ever-changing and nobody ought to be stuffed into confined boxes.
