Award-winning Mafeking Road comes to Kalk Bay Theatre

Watch Andrew Laubscher and Mathew Lewis perform some of South Africa’s most-loved stories

‘Mafeking Road’, the award-winning physical performance that recently took the National Arts Festival by storm, graces the stage of the Kalk Bay Theatre from Thursday, 30 August until Saturday, 8 September 2012. The show runs from Wenesdays to Saturdays only and starts at 8.30pm.

For those of you who haven’t yet heard, ‘Mafeking Road’ is a one hour whirlwind act that whips through some of the best-loved short stories by Herman Charles Bosman, one of South Africa’s favourite writers. The show is performed by Andrew Laubscher (also known for ‘Lovborg’s Women’ and, ‘Is it because I’m Jack’) and Mathew Lewis (from ‘Lenny and the Wasteland’) and directed by Tara Notcutt (the director of ‘…miskien’, ‘Dream, Brother’ and ‘Thom Pain’). Together, they bring you unique and fresh interpretations of stories renowned for their ironic take on the contradictions in Afrikaner culture, such as ‘In The Withaak’s Shade’ and ‘Willem Prinsloo’s Peach Brandy’.   In short, this is Bosman for the next generation, and audience members can look forward to enthralling physical theatre told in a “comic book style”.

‘Mafeking Road’ won the prestigious Standard Bank Silver Ovarian Award for Physical Theatre at the 2011 National Arts Festival, Grahamstown.

Tickets cost R95p/p for those who wish to see the show only, and R245p/p for those who’d prefer to see the show and eat a two-course meal. The cost is R295p/p for the show plus a three-course meal. It’s advised to book in advance, and this can be done by visiting the Kalk Bay Theatre website listed below. For those booking the dinner and a show package, please note dinner is served from 7pm and the show starts at 8.30pm.
