MV Logos Hope Book Fair at the V&A Waterfront

The “World’s Largest Floating Bookshop” sails into Cape Town

Berthed at the V&A Waterfront, Jetty 2, MV Logos Hope – billed as the world’s largest floating book fair – bobs majestically. Home to thousands of paperbacks, from fantasy novels and educational textbooks to inspiring biographies and informative atlases, this one-of-a-kind vessel seeks to share its treasures with the hundreds of countries she visits each year. And now from Friday, 24 June to Monday, 11 July 2016, MV Logos Hope (for the first-time ever) is docked in the Mother City, open to the public to explore her pretty book-filled decks.

Following the three attributes – knowledge, help and hope – MV Logos Hope (operated by a German registered non-profit organisation, GBA Ships) ultimately sails around the globe docking at various ports offering nations quality, affordable books as well as exclusive on-board functions. The non-profit international bookshop and youth service project invites all to purchase top-notch literature at a fraction of its retail price as well as view an array of interactive events hosted on the distinctive ship.

With over 5 000 paperbacks available (covering a wide range of subjects including science and sports, academic texts, children’s narratives, dictionaries and so much more), each novel, volume, hard and softcover has been carefully sourced and chosen to cater for (and be of interest to) a wide range of individuals. In addition, in some ports a significant number of books are also donated to help establish or enhance libraries for the public, school, colleges and universities respectively.

The vessels first live theatrical performance, CS Lewis’ The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (adapted for the stage by Jimmy Hendricks), will be showcased on Saturday, 25 June and Sunday, 3 July and 10 July 2016. This is one of the many interactive events that will take place on board the ship.

About MV Logos Hope

The newly MV Logos Hope is twice as big as any of its GBA predecessors – Logos, Doulos (which visited Cape Town in 2002) and Logos II – providing a wider range of possibilities for visitors, guests and staff members. The unique vessel can hold up to 800 visitors at any time and has the capacity to hold an additional 700 in the Logos Lounge and Hope Theatre combined. Furthermore, almost 500 crew members and guests can be accommodated in the ship’s 200 cabins.

Representing approximately 60 different nationalities on board – all crew and staff are non-salaried volunteers who include many serving in their professional capacity as seafarers, engineers, electricians, nurses, teachers and chefs – the ship serves as ambassador of goodwill and international relations seeking to help educate and transform communities promoting unity in diversity.
