30 years of democracy, 10 ways to celebrate
Perhaps this exhibition is the only positive thing to come out of Eskom’s continued plunging of South Africa into darkness. The group expo takes the concept of load shedding and elaborates on it in myriad interpretive ways that explore the ideas of breaking points, meltdowns and catharsis. The art display is on at Commune.1 Gallery from Tuesday, 30 June until Thursday, 16 July 2015.
We’ve all experienced what it’s like to suddenly have the lights go out, the systems crash and a sudden stillness descend on the streets. Load shedding is a reality of living in this country, but it’s also an extended metaphor for the state of our existence. Sometimes, life just gets too busy, heart-breaking and overwhelming. Then, we long for a system reboot, for catharsis and recovery. Sometimes the darkness is a welcome relief; the chance to start anew.
And that’s what this exhibition is all about. Each of the participating artists examine the theme in their own way, from Freemantle’s volatile ‘lightning conductor printing press’ images to Pinnock’s Invisible Cities-inspired fantastical steel sculptures that explore the idea of the complex urban grid that our cities are dependent on.
There are eleven participating artists in total, including Jake Singer, Alexandra Karakashian, Thabo Pitso, Bonolo Kavula, Olivié Keck, Sepideh Mehraban, Adam Munro, Marlene Steyn & Jo Voysey. Keep a look out for Kavula’s ‘obfuscation’ found objects, Mehraban’s opaque Farsi canvasses, Voysey’s experimental medicinal mediums and Keck’s meditating Wabi-Sabi-inspired figure.
With a unique take on load shedding and multiple complex and beautiful works to view, this exhibition is the proverbial candle in the dark.
