In partnership with the non-profit organisation Yabonga, a group of HIV-positive children have banded together to rally for support through the power of song; the group, named the Voices of Yabonga, will launch their CD at the Baxter Theatre, Wednesday 30 May 2012.
Yabonga is an NGO aimed at creating an effective, sustainable model of care for families living with HIV/AIDS. Through education, support and skills development that seek to empower men and women, Yabonga looks to lead community members in creating positive changes in the lives of their children and the families within their communities.
The Voices of Yabanga was formed when four American students were inspired by the talents of the youth they encountered during their volunteer programs with the non-profit. This spurred on a new project, a CD compilation of traditional Xhosa music performed by the youth, which eventually evolved into the Baxter Theatre launch on Wednesday.
After successfully sourcing financing through Kickstarter.com, a crowd sourced funding site, the students were able to fund production of the CD, thus making the Voices of Yabonga accessible to international audiences.
The launch concert will take place at the Golden Arrow Studio at the Baxter Theatre, entry is free and copies of the CD as well as a digital download will be available for free. Donations are most welcome.
