On Saturday, 7 December, the close-knit community of Kommetjie invites outsiders into their wacky world. They are hosting their annual Kommetjie Festival – a day and night jam with food, markets and music.
It’s a fantastic family outing in this small (they have just around 3000 people) seaside village, known as an excellent surfing and crayfishing spot. Aside from enjoying a browse around the Christmas craft market or indulging in food and drinks at the beer tent, visitors also get to have a taste of Kommetjie’s quirky side with off-the-wall contests, like the Surf Showdown Competition.
At sunset, as you cool down from the day’s activity, stay on to enjoy bands from the coastal town and beyond, including Wendy Oldfield and Cape Town bluegrass outfit Crimson House Blues.
