Kommetjie Festival

Head down to this surfing town for a day full of fun and festivities

On Saturday, 7 December, the close-knit community of Kommetjie invites outsiders into their wacky world. They are hosting their annual Kommetjie Festival – a day and night jam with food, markets and music.

It’s a fantastic family outing in this small (they have just around 3000 people) seaside village, known as an excellent surfing and crayfishing spot. Aside from enjoying a browse around the Christmas craft market or indulging in food and drinks at the beer tent, visitors also get to have a taste of Kommetjie’s quirky side with off-the-wall contests, like the Surf Showdown Competition.

At sunset, as you cool down from the day’s activity, stay on to enjoy bands from the coastal town and beyond, including Wendy Oldfield and Cape Town bluegrass outfit Crimson House Blues.

What to expect at the 2013 Kommetjie Festival

  • Surf Showdown
This anything-goes surf contest, which is held on the popular Long Beach, has no rules except that the boardriders have to entertain the spectators. There will be prizes for the best dressed surfer, the most original board/craft and the most entertaining ride of the day. Pre-entries are available on the Kommetjie.org site or by emailing info@kommetjiesurf.com or calling +27 (0) 79 966 0777 and they cost R50p/p. Entries will be available on the day at a cost of R80p/p. Registration starts at 9:30am and the show down kicks off at 10am.
  •  NSRI Beach Run/Walk
Take a relaxing stroll or an invigorating run on the 5- or 10-km route from Long Beach to Noordhoek in support of Kommetjie’s local National Surf Rescue crew. The morning activity ends back at the festival venue on the Kom lawns. Entry for the NSRI Beach Run/Walk will be available on the day at a cost of R50p/p for the 10-km route and R30p/p for the 5-km route. This event starts at 8am.
  • Kommetjie’s Got Talent
Don’t miss this showcase of some of the serious talent that Kommetjie has to offer. Pretty much anything goes so expect to see everything from the weird to the wonderful. Contestants are fighting for a R1000 prize and the first act hits the stage at 2pm.
  • Anything that Floats
Held at one of Kommetjie’s most historic and scenic spots (a natural tidal pool that was used by Khoi San fisherman back in the day), this contest is open to anything big, small, ingenious or ridiculous that floats. If the entries from last year’s Anything that Floats event are anything to go by, it’s bound to be an interesting and spectacular show. Entry costs R50 per float with a team of two and R50p/p for each additional member thereafter. The floats have to be made from scratch (meaning no surfboards, paddle boats, longboards etc). Anything that Floats is limited to 20 entrants and people can enter either by emailing Ingrid@bateleurbrokerscc.co.za or calling +27 (0) 83 497 4511.The contest starts at 3:30pm.
  • Live Music
Though entry to the festival is free, you need tickets to see the bands perform and these will be available on the day. Entry costs R80p/p for adults and R30p/p for kids under the age of 16. The line-up is as follows
    • Wendy Oldfield, Tim Parr & Lionel Bastos
    • Crimson House Blues
    • Rockerfellas
    • Trenton and Free Radical
    • Southern Sons
    • 7th Wave

 Tickets for 2013 Kommetjie Festival
