On the same weekend that some of South African jazz’s best and brightest young talent is set to captivate audiences at the Baxter Theatre’s Big Band Jazz Festival, two legendary and long-time established jazz artists – Jimmy Dludlu and Roberto Fonseca – are scheduled to play live in concert at Cape Town’s City Hall (Friday, 1 June) and St Georges Cathedral (Saturday, 2 June) at 7pm.
Dludlu, hailed as one of South Africa’s most talented jazz guitarists, also recently won a South African Music Award for “Jazz Album of the Year” for his work Tonota. And his Latin American pianist counterpart, Fonseca, has been credited as “the most charismatic Cuban musician of his generation”; the Afro-Cuban performance also marks the launch of his new album YO, a collection dedicated to Africa.
Funds raised by both Cape Town concerts will go toward the new Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital that’s being built in Johannesburg, and a portion of the profits raised by the Saturday performance will go toward much-needed repairs to the St Georges Cathedral roof.
As a postscript to the concerts, the artists will lend their time and their skill to roughly 100 emerging musicians in a workshop on Sunday, 3 June at the City Hall.
The Afro-Cuban team effort in venues regaled for their high-quality acoustics is yet another attempt by the Mother City to establish itself as the jazz capital of South Africa.
Tickets cost R300 each, and are available at Webtickets.co.za or at Webtickets kiosks at Spar supermarkets.
