Green Forest Train Run Series in the Western Cape

Lace up and traverse the lush Cape landscape as spring sets in

As the weather slowly gets warmer, the frosty flora begins to thaw and suddenly blossoms to life as spring sets in. This change in seasons provides the perfect opportunity for hibernating Capetonians to get active once again, with three trail runs scheduled to take place over three months. The popular Green Forest Trail Run Series is back for the fifth year, with runs taking place on Saturday, 6 August, Sunday, 4 September and Sunday, 9 October 2016 in Grabouw and Paarl.

This series of downhill runs will take runners through some of the Western Cape’s most beautiful and vibrant forests. Each event allows entrants to compete in one of three distances; a 21-km, 10-km or 5-km route. The 21-km and 10-km trail runs both start at a high point in the forests and end at the finish line way below. The 5-km fun run will start and end at the bottom of the forest, making it less technical and flatter so you get acclimatised to running in a forest before entering one of the longer challenges.

The first event will take hardy runners through the wintery Lebanon Forest in Grabouw on Saturday, 6 August. The cold temperatures and muddy terrain will make this a more challenging train run, so dress warmly and get back into the groove in preparation for the other two events. The second run will let you see the budding spring flowers in the Hawequa Forest in Paarl on Sunday, 4 September. Finally, the last run will take you through the Nuweberg Forest in Grabouw on Sunday, 9 October, where the warmer temperatures will make for a pleasant race.

A portion of the proceeds from each event will be given to a local conservation initiative in the area, so encourage your friends to enter with you. What’s more, if you enter all three events you will receive cool prizes and discounted entry fees.
