Willie Van Rensburg’s Cultural Contrasts

African folklore, masks and symbolic references

Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate, Franschhoek, proudly presents a solo exhibition, ‘Cultural Contrasts’, by celebrated Pretoria-based artist, Willie van Rensburg, which opens on Sunday, 16 October. The Director of the Association of Arts Pretoria, Pieter van Heerden, will be the opening speaker and runs until16 November 2011.

The title of the show makes references to the contrasts of historical African traditions and contemporary African society. Inspired by these elements, the artist applies masks and symbols in his work with bold design and colour, in order to establish a contemporary approach to the preservation of the symbolic references and heritage of African folklore.

A selection of ceramics and ceramic sculptures by renowned artists such as Andile Dyalvane, Louise Gelderblom, Rae Goosen, Karin Lijnes, Zizamele, Karen Kotze, Zizipho Poswa and Nienke van der Meulen will also be on show.  This will coincide with the ‘Franschhoek Art in Clay’ Festival running for the month of October 2011, with Andile Dyalvane as the festival artist.

The Cape Craft and Design Institute will present their ‘handmade collection’. The ‘Dillon and Jada’ Collection, which includes a range of Vivienne Westwood shoes, is also on show until the end of October.
