DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival in Cape Town

The best parts of a culinary fiesta and outdoor concert come together at this one-of-a-kind Nedbank-presented bash in Green Point

What do Mi Casa, jazz icons the Brand New Heavies, celebrity chef Pete Goffe-Wood’s mouth-watering pork belly sandwiches, ‘Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)’ singers Soul II Soul, Jeremy Loops and Blackanese restaurant owner Vusi Kunene’s amazing Asian African food have in common?

If you guessed the same mother, you’re terribly and horribly wrong. If, however, you used your powers of deductive reasoning to propose that they’re all going to be at the first ever DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival in Cape Town on Sunday, 28 December 2014, you, in the words of Oprah Winfrey, ‘get a car!’.

Actually, you don’t get a car, but you do get the opportunity to attend the one-of-a-kind affair, which, in our eyes, is possibly better. Presented by Nedbank, the outdoor festival is spreading out across the Green Point Common Fields just before the end of the annum to give locals and holidaymakers alike one final 2014 opportunity to enjoy a killer Cape Town calendar event out in the glorious sunshine.

After two massively successful years in Johannesburg, the extravaganza is finally bringing its yummy combination of fabulous food and top-class music to the Mother City. The unlikely but excellent marriage makes the to-do the only festival of its kind in South Africa, and with an incredible line-up of both talented award-winning musicians and brilliant kitchen maestros on the bill, it looks like it’s going to one to remember.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2014 DSTV DELICIOUS INTERNATIONATIONAL FOOD & MUSIC FESTIVAL

  1. Killer International Acts
For the first time ever in Cape Town, two of the UK’s most legendary acts will share the stage to headline the festival. England’s acid jazz and funk pioneers Brand New Heavies, who are hot off the release of a new October 2014 album, and club kingpins Soul II Soul – you’ll know their hit ‘Back to Life (However Do You Want It)’ – will be kicking up the atmosphere to full volume with their world-famous tunes. Expect more than just a few goose bump moments!

  2. Lekker Local Favourites
It’s a South African festival after all, so it goes without saying that some of the best local acts should come and represent – and that’s exactly what’s in store. Mi Casa, Freshlyground, up-and-coming folk favourite Jeremy Loops and kasi soul a cappella group The Soil will be joining the international acts on the bill to bring down the house with their own rhythms and beats.

  3. The Ultimate Pop-up Restaurant
Garth Stroebel, who’s widely considered the grand master of modern South African cuisine, is returning from retirement to take up his spot behind the stove and conjure up a truly special three-course gourmet tasting meal at the festival’s pop-up restaurant. Dishes include the likes of tuna tataki with ginger and sesame, beef rendang with Malay chutney and grilled chilli squid with chorizo. Booking in advance is recommended and can be done via Computicket.com. Tickets cost R600p/couple (drinks excluded) and seatings are at 12pm, 3pm and 6pm. This is a rare opportunity to taste the cooking of one of the country’s best, so it is well worth the outlay.

  4. Food Trucks, Food Booths & Mobile Kitchens Galore
You can travel the world with only your fork thanks to the carefully curated gathering of hip Cape Town food trucks and cutting-edge mobile kitchens/food booths. From traditional Argentinean fare and homemade Italian gelato to Portuguese prego rolls and Mexican tacos filled with beer-braised pork, you’ll find it at the 20 plus purveyors. In short, there’s something to suit nearly every palate under the sun. Come hungry.

  5. A Food Festival for Music Lovers and a Music Festival for Food Lovers
If you haven’t figured it out quite yet, the best of both worlds are coming together at this awesome summer festival in a completely fresh way. Expect to have your notion of ‘concert food’ (cue thoughts of mysterious hot dogs) completely transformed and count on never settling for that Café Del Mar Chillout Mix as the backing soundscape to a culinary festival ever again.
