The door to Cape Town’s members-only cannabis club is suitably discreet; you might wonder if you’ve found the right place… Until you enter the door. Inside Cannibisters Herbal Apothecary, now with over 90 strains of weed, is an inviting two-level laidback space with couches, a pillow fort, and The Serenity Room (filled with psychedelic art). Take a peek inside.
The online membership system is secure; you use a tablet to make your order and it’s brought to your seat. Image: Cannibisters
Cannibisters, which opened in December 2021, has become Cape Town’s happy space, with 23 000 members and on average 50 joining a day. Flooded with natural light, dappled through frosted windows, with ‘90s RnB and throwback hits on speakers, Cannibisters is a dream come true for founder Pierre Sarembock.
Up the spiral staircase, friends hang out in the pillow fort or play Scrabble under the TV.
Leather couches sprawl underneath prohibition-era newspaper clippings about marijuana and artwork handpicked by Pierre, an art lover. There’s pieces of pop art with Princess Diana (that literally pops out of the wall), trippy psychedelic art of Marilyn Monroe and even commissioned pieces from members.
Signup tablets can be found at the reception desk (or sign up online). Image: Cannibisters
Coffee drinkers start drifting into the club from 10am for a brew and a smoke. There's a “cannibar” selling infused and non-infused coffee and tea.
This, plus the high-speed wifi and large rustic wooden table, makes Cannibisters a mellow remote work environment.
Regulars start turning up from the afternoon, and from 6pm, the club is in full swing. It helps that it’s open 365 days of the week from 10am until 11.30pm, and located in one of the busiest streets on Sea Point's Main Road, across from Mojo Market, Checkers and the strip of trendy bars and restaurants.

It’s hard to miss the green neon “Nip it in the bud” sign as you approach the cannabis bar. With close to 92 strains on the shelf, it’s like a scene from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (if Willy Wonka was a weed geek).
There’s everything from pre-rolled joints and buds by the gram to clean bongs and grinders available for use (and purchase). The human-sized lit-up glass display rotates invitingly, showing off shelves upon shelves of colourful gummies, cookies, fudgy brownies, chocolates, cakes and more (even sea salt kettle chips).

All of the products, including kosher and halaal edibles, are tried and tested by Cannibisters themselves, who work with a chef and make sure that the cannabis supplied (when not sourced from their own farm) is rigorously tested and completely natural.
For geeks, Cannibisters is like a candy shop, without being intimidating to novices. “I was a customer before I started working there, and it’s always been a safe and calm space,” says Martine, a staff member at Cannibsiters.
She encourages you to let the staff guide you. If something does not work for you, they can adjust your dosage or put together the ideal “starter pack”.

The highlight is The Serenity Room. As the name suggests, it's a calm space for de-stressing or a quiet space to work. Unlike the main floor, this room has its own private bathroom and ventilation system of extraction units.
The ceiling is covered with almost 300 colour-changing lanterns (which are often set to green and blue, known for creating restfulness). Four TVs stream Netflix, Youtube Premium and DSTV (with bluetooth headphones for private use).
One of the TVs showcase trippy psychedelic art, which you can watch with 3D glasses – it’s mesmerising.
Premium memberships are offered in twofold: Platinum and Diamond. Image: Lara Van Zyl
As an active member, you’re able to buy products online, visit the club and book an appointment with the club’s medicinal cannabis practitioner. Plus, you’ll be able to have your order delivered and pay interest-free in up to four installments.
Regular members pay R100 for a 30-day membership and are allowed in the club, after passing the screening process.
To access The Serenity Room, you either need to sign up as a platinum or diamond member. This can be done in store or online.
