Cape Town Run In The Dark

Lace up and take part in this world-wide initiative for charity

Slip into your running shoes and enjoy a warm summer evening jog along the Cape Peninsula’s pristine coastline in the Cape Town chapter of the global initiative Run In The Dark. This night run will see hundreds of runners gather at the Outspan Road Car Park in Fish Hoek on Wednesday, 16 November 2016, in support of an urgent need to cure paralysis.

Run In The Dark will take place on the same night in over 50 pop-up locations around the world, and with five official locations in the United Kingdom (Dublin, Cork, Belfast, London and Manchester) this global night run will be an event worth attending. Streets around the world will turn into flowing displays of flashing armbands, like glowing veins through the cities’ cores.

The 5-km and 10-km charity race will kick off in Fish Hoek and take joggers along the beautiful Simon’s Town Road up to Glencairn and back. This 5-km circuit is an easy challenge with stunning views that will morph into twinkling lights and cool coastal breezes as the sun sets. Participants looking for a slightly longer challenge will take part in the 10-km run, which simply laps the 5-km circuit twice.

All the proceeds from the night run will be given to the Mark Pollock Trust which aims to find and connect scientists, technologists and physiologists to fast-track a cure for spinal cord injuries and paralysis. In 1998, Mark Pollock lost his eye sight, but instead of giving up on life, he became an adventure athlete. Pollock competed in ultra endurance races across deserts, mountains and polar ice caps. Then, in 2010 he fell from a second floor window and broke his back, leaving him paralysed and wheel chair-bound. His new mission as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader is to cure paralysis and motivate people to live to their fullest potential.
