Returning for another year of wholesome family fun, the Cape Town Festival is celebrating its 16th annual event, and will be taking place from Saturday, 19 until Monday, 21 March 2016 (Human Right’s Day). Hosted by One City, Many Cultures, this year’s fest has the theme ‘African Queens’ and will encompass concerts, youth workshops and community festivals, all in the name of fostering creativity, inclusivity and togetherness.
Seeking a more tolerant, more integrated and united city of Cape Town, the fiesta’s highlight is always its concert, which is happening this year on Monday, 21 March 2016 in Company’s Garden, with a lekker line-up that includes hip hop sensation Youngsta, along with numerous other forms of entertainment such as the arts and crafts fair, food market and kiddies’ zone.
There’s another mini concert on Saturday, 19 March, with an awesome roster that includes UWC’s Centre for Performing Arts’ Jazz Quartet and various other top-notch acts. Additionally, a City Walk in conjunction with the Cape Town Partnership is also happening on the Saturday, while myriad fabulous festivities are planned for Sunday, 20 March, including a fine music concert in Company’s Garden, along with a community tango session hosted by the Summer Tango Series. Expect upbeat tunes from DJ Sylvia Westcott and fun and versatile renditions of the ‘dance of passion’ for both beginners and experienced dancers. The dancing starts at 2pm and will continue for two hours – and it’s free!
As this year marks 40 years since the 16th of June uprisings in 1976, 60 years since the Women’s March in Pretoria in 1956, and 50 years since the devastating destruction of District Six, there will be a heritage discussion on Monday, 21 March at the Iziko South African Museum. Both young and veteran activists are invited to congregate to discuss the role of language in heritage.
