Earthwave Beach Festival

Family fun, competitions and Guinness World Record attempts at Muizenberg’s Surfer’s Corner

Cowabunga, dude! The seventh annual Earthwave Beach Festival returns to the surfing mecca of Muizenberg on Sunday, 27 September 2015, sporting the usual host of sea and sand events, plus attempts to break not one but TWO Guinness World Records this year.

Hundreds of board riders will be crashing into the Cape Town beach community to try and beat the record for the most surfers riding the same wave, which was last set at the 2009 Earthwave fest, with 110 people managing to stand on their boards simultaneously.  The second big record to break is the world’s largest bikini parade, so ladies are invited to don a two-piece to make history. The current record is held by Huludao City in China, which had a whopping 1085 scantily dressed women parade around the venue in 2012.

Organiser and co-founder Paul Botha says, “We’re confident that the enthusiastic Cape Town beach community that has enabled us to set and retain the world record for the most surfers on the same wave since 2006 will also support this attempt to claim the bikini parade record.”

Aside from cheering on the record breaking stunt-folk, families and friends can get involved in numerous action-packed activities, like surfing, skateboarding and paddling competitions and beach games.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE 2015 EARTHWAVE BEACH FESTIVAL IN CAPE TOWN

SURF’S UP: The annual surfing competition allows budding grommets and seasoned surfers take to the sparkling West Coast to land some wicked waves. Competitions are set to get underway at around 2pm so be sure to come prepared and get your armbands.

WORLD RECORD ATTEMPTS: If you’re not going to be a part of history, you can watch it happen! There will be two world record attempts on the day of the festival, with bikini clad women strutting their stuff (for the largest bikini parade), and eager surfers attempting to  wave-ride as one to win the title.

FOOD, KID’S ACTIVTIES AND MORE: Want a superb family day out? The festival has a plethora of activities to entertain the little ones, along with yummy food stalls to grab a bite to eat. Make sure that you come prepped for a beach day out (don’t forget your frisbee and beach towel!).

A GOOD CAUSE: A portion of the festival’s proceeds will go to Dare to Share, a charity that helps those in need, and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) who make our seas a safer space.
