A movie and dinner extravaganza with a difference
Blood Brothers at The Fugard Theatre
The local version of Willy Russell’s critically acclaimed West End production returns to Cape Town
Following a successful run of sold out shows at Theatre on the Bay in Camps Bay and Montecasino Theatre in Johannesburg, Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers is back in Cape Town for more on-stage drama at The Fugard from Wednesday, 12 February to Sunday, 25 May 2014.
For the first time since it opened at the Lyric Theatre in London in 1983, the critically acclaimed musical has been adapted and given an Mzansi-style makeover by South African playwright David Kramer. So while the original takes place in Liverpool, this version of Blood Brothers takes place within the Cape Coloured community. Nonetheless, the central story remains the same: a mother is forced to separate her fraternal twin sons because of her desperate financial situation, and though the boys grow up in different neighbourhoods – one with the well-off Mrs Lyons and the other at home in poverty – the pair become friends.
The play returns with its star cast of talented local performers, including Idols semi-finalist Bianca Le Grange as the fraught mother and 2012 Fleur du Cap Theatre Award winner Dean Balie and Ephraim Gordon as the two brothers. Having received favourable acclaim from local media – the Cape Argus called it “impressive and chilling”, while Business Day described the production as “sheer stage dynamite” – Blood Brothers is a definite must-see for any and all musical theatre enthusiasts.
