Celebrate all forms of dance and movement at this premier Mother City dance event. The 2015 Baxter Theatre Dance Festival will run from Thursday, 8 to Saturday, 17 October 2015 with a jam-packed line-up. The fiesta boasts three different programmes that not only pay homage to the art of movement, but also provides a platform for established, emerging and young dancers, choreographers and companies to showcase their skills in a professional setting.
Made up of three programmes (Main, Off-Main and Fringe) spread across 10 days and taking place on the main theatre stage, the event will see dancers crump, canter and careen to the instructions of veteran and upcoming choreographers in what has become one of Cape Town’s most popular annual dancing events.
The festival boasts an impressive history of commissioned work, featuring well-known choreographers such as Steven van Wyk and Thalia Laric (2014), Ananda Fuchs (2012), Grant van Ster (2011), Carolyn Holden from La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre (2010), Mamela Nyamza (2009), Levern Botha (2008), Yarisha Singh and Celeste Botha (2007), Marlin Zoutman (2006) and Ebrahim Medell (2005).
The Baxter Theatre Dance Festival began in 2004 and has since seen over 500 local choreographers displaying their works on stage, with around 4000 dancers from over 400 studios, dance schools and companies from around the Western Cape presenting an impressive variety of dance styles. So this year’s event will build on the foundations of past events and will certainly move you.
PROGRAMMES FOR THE 2015 BAXTER THEATRE DANCE FESTIVAL
MAIN PROGRAMME (8-17 OCT 2015): The main schedule will run each evening at 8pm, and is billed to showcase the productions of established professional companies and invited choreographers.
OFF-MAIN PROGRAMME (10 OCT 2015 at 5pm): This one-day line-up of events will take place on Saturday, 10 October 2015 and will feature young emerging choreographers and student work. See up and coming artists put their best foot forward and give audiences a taste of things to come.
FRINGE PROGRAMME (17 OCT 2015 at 2pm): With a holistic approach to performance art and in an effort to encourage young dancers, the festival will, once again host its fringe programme. This afternoon show provides a platform for youth and school groups, small studios and traditional dance groups to perform on a professional platform.
