Who’s the South African musician Nelson Mandela once described as ‘better than Bach and Beethoven’? Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly known as Dollar Brand), of course. Why does this apply to you? Because the renowned pianist will be gracing our pretty city with a concert under the stars at Maynardville amphitheatre on Friday, 18 December 2015.
On par with top musicians around the world, Ibrahim began his illustrious musical journey at the tender age of seven, when he started formal piano lessons. During the course of his long and impressive career he performed with multiple lyrical legends, including Hugh Masekela. Bra Hugh and Ibrahim recorded with the Jazz Epistles, South Africa’s first premiere jazz group.
During the apartheid years Ibrahim’s songs ‘Manenberg’ and ‘Soweto’ were frequently used as protest anthems, and continue to be popular today. While in exile in Europe in 1963, the jazz aficionado joined forces with Duke Ellington to record Duke Ellington presents the Dollar Brand Trio.
In the 1980s Ibrahim founded Ekaya (a septet), which grew to become one of the foremost acoustic jazz groups of its time, aperforming all over the globe. Ibrahim has been hosted in prestigious venues across the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York. His latest release is The Song is My Story, which came out in 2014.
Regarded as one of the world’s greatest composers, pianists and modern jazz figures, Ibrahim will be entrancing audiences at Maynardville with a selection of his best-loved scores.
