William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Maynardville Open-air Theatre

Fred Abrahamse’s African-infused production of Shakespeare’s classic love story moves to Maynardville for the summer

William Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ takes to the stage at Maynardville’s outdoor theatre from Monday, 21 January, until Saturday, 23 February 2013.

This all-time classic English theatre piece is given a fresh coat with a truly African twist. Lasers, a deconstructed forest and renowned actors bring to life the story that has been made famous through the centuries as the celebrated playwrights’ works have been performed on stage and taught at schools and universities around the world.

The Maynardville production will highlight the levity and heart-warming tale of love that still strikes a chord today. Famed director and master of multiple theatrical arts Fred Abrahamse places the bard’s classic work in a world that will appeal to young audiences and seasoned theatre patrons alike.

The production was a hit with a truly diverse audience during its 2012 run at the Artscape and promises to do the same at the home of Shakespeare in the Mother City, Maynardville. The open-air venue has become a must for learners who want to see their set works brought to life. This year (2013) marks the its 57th season.
