The lecherous Duke, makes a game of seducing women. Rigoletto is the Duke's joker, who has raised his beautiful daughter, Gilda in secret, to protect her.

Hearing of this enticing conquest, the Duke pursues Gilda and has his loyal followers abduct her. Gilda’s father, the embittered, mocked Rigoletto plots revenge. But in the end, as the music climaxes in a torrential storm scene, the plans go wrong.
