Shawn Phillips and Guy Buttery live at the Albert Hall

Culture Talent brings you the finest in live acoustic entertainment in Cape Town

A thriving bohemian culture club, the Albert Hall in Woodstock is fast becoming one of Cape Town’s favourite entertainment venues as it plays host to fantastic musical collaborations of both local and international talent.

The latest in this trend is an exciting double-bill performance by the legendary Shawn Phillips and Guy Buttery, starting at 9pm on Saturday 7 February.

US singer/songwriter Shawn Phillips has worked with industry greats over the last 40 years including Eric Clapton, The Beatles, Ravi Shankar, Joni Mitchell, Burt Bacharach, Donovan, Michael Kamen and Andrew Lloyd Webber. His 20 + albums have received international recognition (and some, multi-platinum status) and he has performed in the far corners of the world.

He has a strong fan base in almost every country and continues to tour internationally. He has been on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine and featured in all media, television included, in the US, Canada, Europe, the Far East and South Africa.

His classical music has been performed by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and he is currently composing a ballet as well as other new material for an acoustic CD at his home studio on the coast near Port Elizabeth, SA.

He is also a crew member of the National Sea Rescue Institute in PE and has started recording and producing South African musicians at his studio.

One of South Africa’s finest acoustic guitarists, Guy Buttery, has returned home after an extensive six week tour of the UK and Europe as well as an exclusive performance for the prince of Bahrain. Guy was invited to perform at numerous prestigious festivals throughout 2008, representing South Africa in no less than five different countries.

He also had the honour of playing alongside some of the world’s greatest guitarists including the likes of Martin Simpson, Bob Brozman, Gordon Giltrap, Adrian Legg, Pierre Bensusan and many more.

Buttery said: “The tour was a huge success! It was really awesome to share the stage with a bunch of my heroes, but it’s always good to be back on African soil and I’m really looking forward to playing to my favourite audience again.” Guy will be reuniting with legendary folk singer, Shawn Phillips for a one off show in Cape Town’s new music venue, The Albert Hall.
