Locals help us uncover the hidden treasures of this Garden Route gem
We’ve got all the details on where to park and which bus or train to take to see legendary punk-funk-rock icons, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, set the Cape Town Stadium alight on Tuesday, 5 February 2013.
With more than 45 000 revellers expected to attend the concert, the City of Cape Town has devised an extensive public transport plan to alleviate traffic and ensure the safe arrival of concert-goers. Do note, no parking will be available at the stadium and in the surrounding residential areas.
Though, the Fan Walk will be open before and after the concert, and a number of after-hours train and bus services will be operating.
Public Transport Services
For those who prefer to preserve their sanity and take advantage of a safe and stress-free alternative to driving, Metrorail train and MyCiTi bus services will operate after-hours. Do note that normal operating times and standard tariffs apply BEFORE the concert.
A free shuttle will be available from the MyCiTi Civic Centre bus station to the Cape Town Stadium to all ticket holders (be sure to hold onto your stub for the return trip).
Parking will be available in the city bowl and the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) in the designated parking bays for those who wish to stroll down the Fan Walk to the stadium or to take advantage of the free shuttle. Alternatively, parking will be available at the V&A Waterfront, which is a mere hop, skip and jump from the stadium, at normal prices.
METRORAIL SERVICES
All train services to and from Cape Town station will run as per the regular schedule before the show, and passengers will be required to pay the appropriate fee. Limited services after the performance will be available FREE of charge to valid ticket stub holders; these trains will depart promptly at the given times.
Train routes and departure times
For more information on train schedules, feel free to contact the Transport Information Centre’s toll-free number 0800 65 64 63 or visit Capemetrorail.co.za.
MYCITI BUS SERVICE
Standard operating fares and hours will apply for all routes to the Civic Centre on the Table View, Waterfront and Gardens routes (click here for more info about standard MyCiTi routes). As mentioned though, while supporters will have to pay for their way to the Civic Centre, the trip home is free on presentation of a valid concert ticket stub.

ROAD CLOSURES
Roads in and around the Cape Town Stadium will be either fully or partially closed on the day of the show. Law enforcement teams will monitor the flow of traffic, and public transport services may experience delays and deviations due to the road closures.

PARKING
Strict parking restrictions will be enforced in the residential areas bordering the Cape Town Stadium from midnight on Tuesday, 5 to Wednesday, 6 February 2013, including Main Road. Motorists are strongly advised to obey the signage and regular restrictions, and charges apply to kerbside parking in the CBD for a week day.
Disabled parking facilities:
Dedicated disabled parking facilities have been allocated on D.F. Malan Drive for those who wish to use the stadium shuttle. Parking is only available to supporters with an official disability permit from the City of Cape Town, and a formal request to take advantage of the dedicated parking area must be made by contacting Mike Lord at mike@alliancesafety.co.za. The Vehicle Access Permit (VAP) needs to be clearly displayed, in full colour, on the dashboard to gain access to the parking area.
Drop-and-Go:
A drop-and-go facility will be available and attendees are requested to follow the following appropriately sign-posted locations:
V&A Waterfront
Parking to the general public is available at the V&A Waterfront, where standard parking fees apply to certain areas. Do note that due to the concert, traffic in and out may be congested.
PEDESTRIAN ROUTES
City Centre (via Fan Walk)
Parts of the CBD will be open to vehicular traffic, and pedestrians are urged to use the sidewalk and dedicated pedestrian lane to the underpass at the Green Point Circle.
V & A Waterfront
If you’re walking from the V&A Waterfront, use the Granger Bay Boulevard route as the pedestrian walkways along Portswood Road will be restricted.
CYCLING
Put the pedal to the metal and cycle to the stadium. Bicycle racks are located on the eastern (Waterfront) side of the elevated circle. Please note that cyclists are required to provide their own lock and chain as bicycles are left at owners’ own risk. Don’t forget to wear a helmet, reflective clothing and have adequate lighting. Helmets are not permitted in the stadium, except lightweight cycling helmets. Due to the volumes of pedestrians, cyclists are advised to use alternative routes via the V&A Waterfront or the back roads in De Waterkant to access the stadium.
