18:30 – Rewind
South Africa 2009 48min
Dir: Liza Key

Shards of sound from TRC hearings come together to form a truly harrowing Cantata.

To mark its tenth anniversary, South African composer Philip Miller used ‘shards from The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) - the exhalations, intonations, moans, murmurs, gasps – fragments from recorded testimonies to compose Rewind: A Cantata for Voice, Tape and Testimony.

18:45 - ARTSLOT

This year, the Goodman
Galley presents a selection of films by contemporary artists that embrace a diverse array of attitudes and approaches to film as a visual medium.

From the directly political
to the whimsical and absurd, ARTSLOT introduces a range of video works from both established and up-and-coming artists to Encounters 2009.

The artists Kathryn Smith and Sue Williamson will attend the first screening on 4 July.

20:00 - Tyson
USA 2008 90min
Dir: James Toback

A man rising from nothing to unlimited heights, destroyed by his own pride.

Tyson is acclaimed indie director Toback’s stylistically inventive portrait of the mesmerizing baddest boy of boxing and undisputed heavyweight champion of all time, Mike Tyson.

In its depiction of a man rising from the most debased circumstances to unlimited heights, destroyed by his own hubris, Tyson emerges as a modern day version of classic Greek tragedy.

20:15 – Rough Aunties
UK 2008 103min
Dir: Kim Longinotto

Child abuse is not an
easy subject to digest, let alone watch a film about. But this remarkable, gut wrenching, yet uplifting documentary about a group of resolute, tough, outspoken, fervent and endlessly compassionate women reveals both the worst and the best of human kind.

Despite crippling personal tragedies, these five exceptional women battle on, learning, growing and bringing comfort and hope to those children that have little of either.

*Tickets can be purchased online on the Encounters website or at the V&A Waterfront box office
