A shining example of green engineering, Greenpeace’s newest addition to their mean, green, pollution-lean fleet, the Rainbow Warrior, is docking at the Table Bay Harbour at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town on Sunday, 12 August 2012, and tours are being offered to the public at no charge
At the forefront of the fight against the deforestation of the Amazon and the destruction of the oceans, the Rainbow Warrior is a purpose-built vessel that sails the seven seas avenging crimes against our planet in an effort to help achieve Greenpeace’s mission of protecting and conserving the environment.
While all three of Greenpeace’s ships – the Rainbow Warrior, the Arctic Surprise and the Esperanza - tackle environmental issues in the four corners of the earth, the Rainbow Warrior is extremely special. Currently the third incarnation of the non-profit organisation’s flagship – and built entirely on donations - the Rainbow Warrior hit the seas in 2011 as one of the most environmentally-friendly ships ever constructed: its monstrous mast means it can travel faster and longer under wind power, its friction-reducing hull makes movement easier and more efficient, and it has systems that recycle the engine’s heat. Not to mention, a campaigner’s dream, the ship is equipped with a helipad, action boats and can carry up to 8 tonnes of specialised equipment for scientific research; it also has an on-board communication hub capable of streaming live footage to the world’s media.
While the ship is docked in Cape Town, visitors will have the opportunity to board – for free – and explore the inner bowels of this beacon for peace and conservation. The first ship tour starts at 10am and closes at 5pm. No booking is required.
