30 years of democracy, 10 ways to celebrate
As part of their ‘Living Things World Tour’, California-based rap-rock and nu-metal band Linkin Park is billed to entertain the masses – for the first time in South Africa – in a live concert at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday, 7 November 2012.
Best known for the lung-busting vocals of lead singer Chad Bennington and the hip-hop and rap lyrical genius of Mike Shinoda, the band boasts an über, unique sound which has garnered chart-topping albums and high-flying success.
Originally formed in 1996, Linkin Park spent half a decade working on their debut album, ‘Hybrid Theory’, which proved well worth the blood, sweat and tears. Singles such as ‘Crawling’ and ‘One Step Closer’ catapulted them into the alternative music limelight, and cemented their success in the early part of the millennium; they also won a Grammy for ‘Best Hard Rock Performance’ of ‘Crawling’. Their second offering, ‘Meteora’ may not have been as successful as their debut, but the band’s sophomore LP nonetheless secured the third spot for best-selling album in the US in 2003, along with numerous awards for hits like ‘Somewhere I Belong’, ‘Breaking the Habit’ and ‘Numb’.
Now, over a decade later, the band’s released their fifth album ‘ Living Things’, which music authority Rolling Stone has described as “experimental” and “electronics-loving”. Similarly, co-frontman Mike Shinoda revealed in an interview with music news magazine (NME) that they finally feel "comfortable in [their] own skin" and that this album is a result thereof. While there have been a few more critical reviews, ‘Living Things’ has proven itself a hit with old and new fans, debuting at the number one spot on Billboard 200 and selling over 223 thousand copies in its first week.
While their earlier work is similar to the hard-hitting tunes of alternative rock and metal bands like Limp Bizkit and Staind, the band remain respectful in their lyrics and choose not to curse or swear in any of their songs. Although the tour is set to promote their latest album, audiences can expect a rocking show of more than a decade of the bands iconic tracks.
