Infecting the City Returns to Cape Town

See cutting edge performance and visual arts hit public spaces throughout the central business district and including St Georges Mall, Greenmarket Square and Company's Garden.

The fabulous, fascinating and FREE Infecting the City (ITC) public arts events once again invade the streets and public spaces of Cape Town's central business district, between Wednesday, 5 and Saturday, 8 April 2017. For the 10th year running, Capetonians and visitors to the city will be able to access local and international dance, music, theatrical performances and video installations, completely FREE of charge during a dynamic four-day programme, which includes two evening sessions and two artist workshops.

This year, the annual cultural fiesta returns with even more tricks up its sleeve to engage and entertain Mother City crowds like never before. For those unfamiliar with the run of things, the arts festival utilises CBD street corners as staging grounds, city squares as bandstands and forgotten spaces in the heart of the Mother City as theatres, concert halls and galleries to enliven Cape Town’s communal nooks and crannies and to make public space, well, public once again.

Staged across a variety of Cape Town's communal areas (think Company’s Garden, St Georges Mall and Greenmarket Square), the free and accessible celebrations invite locals and those from abroad to stumble upon a selection of high-quality, multidisciplinary visual displays.

A variety of local and international artists and performers are on the bill for this year's event, bringing their work to the fore and building on strengths to create powerful collaborations. Some of the highlights this year include theatrical dance performances by Indoni Dance, Arts and Leadership Academy and Darkroom Contemporary, video installations by Lebohang Kganye, jazzy renditions by Mandla Mlangeni, a performative collaboration by Moeketsi Koena and Gaby Saranouffi and a work by internationally recognised artistic director Mandla Mbothwe.

Not to mention, many of the works are spectacular amalgamations of multiple artistic genres, so no matter which discipline you prefer, you’re bound to find something to pique your fancy! Here are some of the public spaces where you can enjoy free theatrical performances, art installations, music recitals, dances and more:
