Hip Hop Kaslam Presents Uthando

Feel the love for home-grown artists and sounds straight from ekasi

Get an earful of Cape Town’s unique, pioneering rap scene at Hip Hop Kaslam presents Uthando, a love-themed African indigenous language music evening, on Saturday, 18 May 2013 at the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch.

A celebration of mother-tongue rhymes, this event features Spaza rap, a form that originated in the Western and Eastern Cape. This sub-genre of hip hop has its roots in isiXhosa, but emcees have been known to spit in combinations of isiXhosa, isiZulu, English and slang. Spaza music is a tribute to the heritage and life in ekasi (the township), and these shows give emcees, singers, poets, dancers, DJs and managers a role in uplifting this 100% South African, often marginalised genre.

The top three acts, Sound Fusion, Aylo and Pozi, were chosen by fans to perform at the event which occurs regularly with themed concerts and a line-up picked by supporters.

Hip Hop Kaslam is a non-profit organisation that was founded in 2010 by Archie “Dat” Sopazi and Phila “Lady P” Nkuzo to garner respect for Spaza artists and show local musicians that they don’t necessarily have to stick to American hip hop culture and rap styles to be successful. The aim is to showcase the genre in spaces that are usually inaccessible and to provide indigenous language artists with practical projects and programmes for career development.   Archie Sopazi was one of the first rhymers to explore Spaza, and over the last 18 years his involvement with the genre has opened doors for fellow artists to significantly change the local scene.
