Delheim’s Mushroom Week at the Delheim restaurant
Put the fun back in fungi and at this Stellenbosch estate’s mushroom festival
Do field mushrooms fill you with fear, or do they get your taste buds working overtime? Whether you need to overcome a phobia or indulge a fetish, at Delheim’s Mushroom Week (from Monday, 2 July to Sunday 8 July 2012) at the Delheim Wine estate in Stellenbosch you can learn all you need to about edible fungi.
The fleshy, fruiting wild mushroom has become the highlight of many menus, and now this Stellenbosch estate, famous for its fungi-rich forest, is hosting a 7-day festival that aims to educate on how to identify the many different species. Not only will you learn to tell your shiitake from your porcino (or porcini), but you’ll get to sample those exotic flavours in top-notch dishes prepared at the on-site Delheim restaurant.
What’s more, for R250p/p on Monday, 2 July and Tuesday, 3 July, guests can scatter through the secret Delheim forest in search of delicacies under the guidance of Nora Sperling-Thiel and Adriaan Smit of the South African Gourmet Mushroom Academy. All foragers will then head to the Garden Restaurant to treat their taste buds to a range of wonderfully wild mushroom dishes.
Even if you can’t spare time to rustle up your own fungi, from Wednesday, 4 to Sunday, 8 July for only R150p/p guests can enjoy a set menu of mushroom dishes. Booking is essential, and can be made by contacting the Delheim restaurant at restaurant@delheim.com or +27 (0) 21 888 4607.
