Cape Winemakers Guild Auction Showcase
Taste exceptional wines from South Africa’s most esteemed winemakers
Forty-five of South Africa’s most talented winemakers will showcase rare limited edition wines at the Cape Town Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) Auction Showcase at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on Thursday, 23 August 2012.
The premium wine tasting event features vino specifically crafted for the annual CWG Auction, an October wine calendar highlight that affords the public the opportunity to purchase unique collector’s pieces from some of South Africa’s most lauded cellar masters.
The auction-ready reds and whites on offer at the wine festival must, by CWG decree, be distinct from each winemaker’s regular label, and must undergo strict chemical and microbiological analysis to ensure the absence of technical defects.
Thus, festival-goers will not only have the chance to interact with winemakers in a relaxed and informal environment, but they’ll also have the rare opportunity to taste one-of-a-kind, never-before-seen small-batch wine from some of the nation’s leading creative geniuses (many of whom are employed by the foremost wine estates in the country!). In the case that a CWG winemaker has not submitted a wine for the 2012 CWG Auction, wine tasting from their standard label will be on offer.
The CWG is a tremendously exclusive organisation made up of only those with the finest industry pedigrees. Started in 1982 by eight enthusiastic winemakers eager to share their knowledge in hopes of creating stand-out South African wines, the guild has grown over the years (it celebrated its 30th birthday in early 2012) to include a host of experts from an assortment of disciplines: port-style specialists, those well-versed in the production of Method Cap Classique, sustainable farm industry leaders and more. Members are added by invitation only, and invitation is only extended to those who have been producing outstanding wines for five years or more and who have displayed superior craftsmanship.
Needless to say, this is no rag-tag, fly-by-night organisation; these are the best and brightest the South African wine industry has to offer. Similarly, the CWG Auction Showcase is no piss-up; come prepared to have your palate do pirouettes and your senses seduced.
The showcase will also feature a silent auction of rare wines in aid of the Guild's Development Trust.
