Nelson Mandela's new constitution, when he swept away Apartheid and ushered in South African democracy in 1994, included the all important "freedom of sexual orientation" clause. Cape Town Pride was not the only gay & lesbian event that started soon after. Well into its second decade, changes are afoot in 2007 with new festival director Brian Kruger, with an expansion of the programme.

Pride 2006's theme was "Uniting Cultures of Cape Town" and was so successful that, for 2007, the festival has been expanded to eleven days, with the Cape Town Pride Pageant taking place the Saturday before the main festival begins (10 February) and the "Mother of all Parades" brought forward to the first Saturday (17 February).

The events during the festivities are many and varied, but the focal point is the parade, which aims to showcase the diversity and sense of togetherness within the gay community. Thousands of people march alongside the outrageous floats and join in the after-party celebrations, where prizes are awarded and top DJs entertain the crowd.

Other highlights of the week include the launch cocktail party, fashion shows, sports events, art exhibitions and some great parties, including a ball.
