---

After a highly successful 2011 Cape Town Carnival during which 60 000 people lined the street and then reveled in Cape Town’s biggest street party, the legendary Carnival returns to Long Street on 24 March 2012.  The Carnival parade includes 11 themed Pods with 80 Lead performers in larger than life costumes, 9 richly decorated floats and 11 Academies. Each Academy has 150 community dancers and the Cape Town Carnival brings together 45 community performance groups from 23 different areas in Cape Town. The 3 best lead dancers on the night will travel to Brazil to perform at the 2013 Rio Carnival.

The theme for the 2012 Carnival is “Cape-to-Cairo”, with 9 Floats and approximately 2000 performers celebrating our continent’s creativity with floats, dance, music and inspired performances.

Never been to the Cape Town Carnival before? Here are five good reasons to go.

Carnival route and times
The Carnival opens at 5pm on the Fanwalk with street performers and a concert at the Stadium forecourt featuring Chad Saaiman and Friends.

The Carnival Procession starts at 8pm from Dixon Street and proceeds along Somerset Road to York Street with food and merchandise available for sale en route.

After the procession, DJ Dino Bravo and others will be spinning the decks until midnight.

Go green
Participants are encouraged to come by foot or use public transport and the organizers are currently in negations to provide free My Citi bus and train rides in conjunction with park and ride facilities.

The 2012 Cape Town Carnival promises to be a magical event not to be missed. For information see the website below.

Afterparty
The Carnival parade will be followed by a free street party from 11pm until midnight at the end of the Carnival route (York Street) with DJ Dino Bravo. You can rest assured that although the official party ends at midnight Cape Town will be partying well into the early hours of the morning.
