5Gum A-Trak and Hudson Mohawke Concert Cape Town

Rock out to the music of two legendary DJs in a secret location for FREE

**Note: All tickets for the 5Gum Cape Town concert have been distributed at this point. If you did not receive an email or text message, you unfortunately have not won tickets.

As part of the second super-secret 5Gum Experience, international DJ royalty A-Trak and Hudson Mohawke (HudMo) are set dominate the turntables and play live in concert at an undisclosed Cape Town location on Saturday, 27 October 2012 (subscribe to our newsletter to find out where).

For those of you who missed 5Gum’s first mysterious jol – the organisers brought Irish indie band Two Door Cinema Club to perform in an industrial warehouse in the middle of Phillipi – listen carefully:

  • You cannot buy tickets to attend the A-Trak & Hudson Mohawke concert;
  • You cannot score the organisers to score a free spot on the dance floor;
  • You cannot scour Gumtree.co.za (even though the name Web site’s name feels somewhat appropriate) for last minute purchases

The #5GumExperience is a free (yes, MAHALA) event that requires party-goers to participate in a social media campaign, and to register for the random chance to attend the concert via that same social media campaign. Part of the registration process requires A-trak and Hudson Mohawke fans to hand over their email and telephone number (just think of it as selling your soul, albeit, in marketing terms), and thus, when the time is near (the week of 24 October), organisers will make contact to disclose the secret location and confirm your attendance. Do note, not everyone who participates in the campaign is granted the right to attend, but those who do ‘win’, are entitled to two tickets. Registration closes on Wednesday, 24 October 2012 at midnight.

This October’s social media campaign is conducted via the 5Gum Facebook page, and includes a murder mystery audio journey.

In short, it’s brandalism at its best, but it’s also an incredibly cool party featuring two of music’s current most phenomenal producers.

A-Trak

Crowned the DMC World DJ Champion before he even started shaving, A-Trak has been dubbed on numerous occasions as a turntable prodigy. Before he hit 25 years of age – but after he’d reigned supreme over nearly every other global DJ title in existence - he was hand-selected by Kanye West to be his tour DJ, not bad for a kid who’d been headlining small clubs only years ago.

Though, his real claims to fame include the co-founding of Fool’s Gold Records, a trendsetting label that’s propelled numerous artists into the limelight, and the release of chart-topping electronic remixes under the collaborative name of Duck Sauce: you’ve heard of ‘Barbara Streisand’ and ‘aNYway’?

Hudson Mohawke (HudMo)

Similar to his co-headliner, Hudson Mohawke distinguished himself as an ingenious mixer from a young age. At 15 he became a finalist for the DMC DJ World Championship, and it didn’t take long before his neon-lit R&B and warehouse-smashing low-end production caught the ear of global players like, again, Kanye West, Chris Brown and Azealia Banks.

These days he packs out shows from Shoreditch (London’s trendy inner city suburb) to SXSW (a massive US music festival), and has been highly praised by critics from the Rolling Stone to the Gaurdian.

The Glaswegian producer cites Quincy Jones as one of his foremost inspirations, and insists that hip-hop is at the ‘ centre of his beating heart’.
