2016 rAge Expo at the GrandWest Casino

The utopia for gamers and technology enthusiasts is coming to the Mother City for the first time

When gamers and geeks think of rAge, the first thing that springs to mind is the massive gaming expo in Johannesburg. That’s about to change as the inaugural rAge Cape Town event comes to the GrandWest Casino from Friday, 18 March to Sunday, 20 March 2016. Dubbed the “really Awesome geek experience”, rAge Cape Town promises to deliver the same exciting activities as its big brother in Joburg.

The weekend-long expo attracts tens of thousands of like-minded fans who flock to be immersed in a world of games, gadgets and geek lifestyle entertainment. Visitors can expect to peruse an enormous catalogue of gaming consoles, chat to local comic book artists or become their favourite fantasy characters through a spot of cosplay.

In addition to the massive expo, enthusiastic gamers can also look forward to a NAG LAN (Local Area Network) BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer – for us noobs) in Cape Town at the same time. The NAG LAN is the biggest LAN event in Southern Africa with over 2500 gamers attending the annual event. Attendees spend 52 solid hours playing multiplayer games on a network as they compete against each other, and it will be held right here in the Mother City for the first time in 2016. The LAN opens at 8am on Friday, 18 March 2016 and ends at 3pm on Sunday, 20 March 2016. Seating arrangements are done on a first-come first-served basis.

“The closure of NAG magazine has allowed us the time and resources to expand the rAge footprint into Cape Town,” explains senior project manager of rAge Michael James. “We’re taking some of the key elements of rAge JHB and bringing them to rAge Cape Town with a vision of growing Cape Town into something unique and exciting,” he says.

If you are enthusiastic about nerd culture and love your gadgets then this is one event you don’t want to miss. So be sure to get your tickets from Computicket.com soon as they're selling out fast.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2016 RAGE CAPE TOWN EXPO

GAMING: Get up-close and personal with the latest in gaming console technology and hardware from industry giants such as Sony and Microsoft. Peruse the selection of hi-tech gaming peripherals like joysticks and mice. Chat to the gaming retail stores and find the best deals on the latest games, accessories and apparel. Take part in a variety of eSports events as you compete against (or alongside) the person sitting next to you.

COMICS: If you want to become a comic artist then representatives from some of the best media and creative arts colleges will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. Similarly, convention artists, graphic artists and comic artists will be attending the event, where you can watch them bring your favourite characters to life.

COSPLAY: What gaming expo would be complete without someone dressed as Spiderman? Come dressed up as your favourite fantasy character, be it from anime, a computer game or a comic book, and take part in some role playing.
