Calling all sci-fi and fantasy geeks to suit up and get prepared for the annual Celludroid Film Festival. This other-worldly movie marathon beams onto the screens at Cape Town’s historic Labia Theatre from Friday, 30 August to Thursday, 5 September 2013.
What to expect at the 2013 Celludroid Film Festival
The fifth chapter of this yearly audiovisual affair puts rare, special edition films on the big screen, offering a thrilling mash-up of fascinating and far-out movies, documentaries and short films in the fields of sci-fi, fantasy and anime. Aside from showing reels you’ll likely never see anywhere else, this alternative festival offers doting cinephiles the right to boast about being the first to watch Mzansi’s big screen premieres.
At the fair, you can feast your eyes on a must-see documentary-style take on H.G. Wells's classic novel “The War of the Worlds” or take in the gripping tale of a lost space traveller in “The Cosmonaut”. What’s more, South African-born director Richard Stanley presents his latest mysterious documentary, “The Otherworld” (“L'Autre Monde”).
From movies touching on cataclysmic prophecies and deadly contagions to a range of short flicks, the assortment of sci-fi screenings offer movie-goers alternative viewing material as opposed to run-of-the-mill, special effects-laden blockbusters.
Also, don’t miss out on the great giveaways in store. Audience members can walk away with Velocity graphic novels and PS3 copies of the recently launched Deadpool video game.
