What better day than Heritage Day, September 24, to hold a concert designed to pay tribute to some of the surviving entertainers who played local stages in District Six during the Apartheid era.
This is a tribute to Cape Town music “Legends” to keep the memory of the area vivid in people’s mind and to celebrate the endurance of formerly dis-enfranchised musicians. It's is also a celebration of how far the Cape Town music industry has come since those bad old days.
The venue is the Good Hope Centre which is perfect as it is part of District Six.
The title “District Six” was chosen by the producer of the show, Jayson King who originates from the area where he plied his entertainment skills whilst running a family grocery business.
The South African public and especially the local community of the former District Six, which was comprised of a very cosmopolitan mixture of various ethnic cultures, are still proud to celebrate the area which was bulldozed and destroyed by the former government.
This concert will afford old friends and neighbours to meet and re-kindle memories of the past, but also to enjoy the music of all genres from the past to the present day.
The featured artists will share the stage with professional gig musicians – a treat for local entertainers who in the past era never had or enjoyed such music accompaniment due to financial constraints as well as the political structures of the old history.
The Line-up:
The Richard Ceasar Band
Blackcurrant Band
Déjà Vu with The Déjà Vu Backing Band
Zelda Benjamin
Carol-Leigh
Young Ideas Malay Choir
Tickets are available through Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers
The Heritage Day concert is a great way to end of a fantastic day of friends, family and of course having a braai, either at home or at one of Cape Town’s best braai spots.
