Cape Town Big Walk |
With a rich history as one of our pretty city’s favourite annual highlights, this year’s event has undergone a massive transformation, and will be launched as the Sunfoil Cape Town Big Walk, on Sunday, 28 February 2016.
Sixteen years down the line and the Big Walk is one of the largest events on the Mother City’s calendar, attracting wonderful walkers from all walks of life. With Sunfoil and Spur Steak Ranches both sponsoring 2016’s stroll, it’s set to be a diverse and vibrant affair, starting in Vlei Road opposite the Cape Town Stadium and meandering around the Sea Point Promenade, with the finish line at the Green Point track.
There are two routes available – the 5km and 10km options. Both give participants ample opportunity to ogle at the beauty of our gorgeous coastline, with a fresh, salty sea breeze to spur on a snappy pace.
Now ranked third in the Western Cape’s sporting events, the Sunfoil Cape Town Big Walk attracts over 20 000 walkers each year, and is known for being a well-coordinated, fun and inclusive affair. The new branding will give the occasion a much-needed facelift, in keeping with the charitable traditions that the walk is synonymous with. The event was founded in 2000 with the intent of giving back to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital and the Academia Library. This year, the Sunfoil Cape Town Big Walk is expanding its fundraising division with the founding of the Cape Town Big Walk Foundation, which will employ a three-tier programme to channel funds towards both long-standing and new beneficiaries.
So if you have a big heart then the Big Walk should be right up your street. Additionally, there’ll be lots of live entertainment, spot prizes and giveaways on the day, along with a medal, Jive cool drink and Polar ice cream for all finishers.
MORE ABOUT THE SUNFOIL CAPE TOWN BIG WALK 2016 PRESENTED BY SPUR STEAK RANCHES
Though in its inception the event was organised as a walking race, these days the competitive nature of the Big Walk has largely been exchanged for a sense of solidarity and social development. Corporate office mates, neighbours, childhood friends and extended family members turn out in droves to lace up their walking shoes and band together under the banner of ‘giving back’.
