Helen Zille Speaks at the Cape Town World Cup 2010 Logo Launch
The city and province launched the Cape Town Soccer World Cup 2010 logo with FIFA president Sepp Blatter
Along with the launching of the Cape Town 2010 Logo at Green Point Stadium on 19 June, came a statement by Helen Zille, Mayor of Cape Town:

"Today we launch the 2010 Host City Logo, and re-affirm our commitment to hosting a successful FIFA Soccer World Cup in Cape Town."

Nine matches and a number of important events are earmarked for Cape Town.

I trust that our hard work and perseverance over the past 18 months reflect the seriousness with which we regard our responsibilities as set out in the Host City Agreement with FIFA.
No other host city has had to go through as many processes as Cape Town, and no other stadium site in the country is as complex legally, politically, geologically, and financially.

Yet we are on schedule on the construction site, and have had to extend council's provisional authorisation for the building work in order to accommodate the advances made.

Let me be clear.

As the local authority that represents the residents of Cape Town, we intend to make this event of lasting benefit to the city and all who live in it.

In this regard, our objective is in harmony with that of FIFA.
Like FIFA, we have to ensure that 2010 in Cape Town is an enormous success.

If it is, it will reflect well on our city and South Africa in the eyes of the international community, improve our global stature, and entice more tourism and investment here.

We are also working to maximise the
material legacy of this event for our city, including new infrastructure and an improved public transport system.

We want our children and their children to look back on the FIFA Soccer World Cup 2010 as a pivotal moment that allowed the city of Cape Town to leapfrog several years forward in economic growth and development."
