The City of Cape Town launched a 2010 host city poster design competition with prizes totalling R30 000 for the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup at the Artscape theatre complex today.

“The winning poster should feature the 2010 corporate slogan, namely Ke Nako – Celebrate Africa’s Humanity and will be used to promote the Mother City,” says Teral Cullen, the City’s 2010 Co-ordinator.

Each of the nine South African host cities are being afforded the opportunity to produce a full colour poster to promote and position themselves ahead of the international soccer tournament.

Fifa will announce the winner in September after the local adjudication panel have selected the winning poster.

“The winning colour poster needs to capture the essence of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, highlighting distinctive features and unique attributes.

The winning design will be reproduced in various sizes ranging from murals on buildings to lapel pin size.

“An independent panel of judges will short list the submissions which will be published in the local media. The public will be able to vote via sms for their choice of design which will inform the panel’s final decision,” says Cullen.

The panel consists of Teral Cullen, Ravi Naidoo of the Design Indaba, Bekithemba Langibele of Cape Town Routes Unlimited, Dr Laurine Platsky , 2010 Co-ordinator: Provincial Government, Pieter Cronjé, the City’s Director: Communication and Michael Worsnip, Director: 2010 Department of Arts and Culture.

The closing date for the 2010 host city poster competition is at 12 noon on May 6 2008.

The short-listed designs will be announced for public voting on May 15.
