City makes R3,6M available to improve lives of Khayelitsha residents
Khayelitsha is to receive a R3,6 million boost from the City of Cape Town as part of its ward allocations

Cape Town's township' suburb Khayelitsha is to receive a R3,6 million boost from the City of Cape Town as part of its ward allocations for the current financial year. Over 100 community organisations in Khayelitsha will benefit from the City's allocation of R2,4 million for capital projects and R1,2 million for operational projects in the three sub-councils in the area which consist of 12 wards.

The ward allocations for Sub-councils 9, 10 and 13, will be of particular benefit to vulnerable groups such as the aged, the youth, women's associations, sports groups, early childhood development and HIV/Aids workers in Khayelitsha. With a population of over a million residents, Khayelitsha (one of the larger townships in Cape Town, together with Guguletu Township and Langa Township) is grossly underdeveloped - with unemployment, poverty and homelessness being the order of the day.

The City's financial grants are aimed at changing the lives of Khayelitsha residents at grassroots level and significantly contributing to the upliftment of communities. One of the most significant initiatives is a R200 000 allocation for the construction of an early childhood facility for over 100 children in Kuyasa.

The grants has been handed over by Councillor Thozama Bevu, Chairperson of Sub-council 9, as well as representatives of Sub-councils 10 and 13 on Friday, 29 September 2006, 12:00 at Lookout Hill, cnr Spine Road and Mew Way, Khayelitsha.

Molo says: "More on townships in Cape Town and township tours to Guguletu , Khayelitsha or Langa can be found in our Things to do in the Cape Town Townships section or the Things to do in the townships at night."

"I highly recommend sleeping a night in one of the Cape Town township Bed & Breakfasts such as Ma Neo in Langa Township in Langa or Vicky's Towhship B&B and Kopanong Bed & Breakfast in Khayelitsha township."
