Roadworks in and around Cape Town & The Western Cape
Updates on Roadworks on main & tourism routes in the Cape, and tips on how to (not) deal with them
In the last years, many roads in and around Cape Town and the Peninsula have been upgraded. Roadworks on the N2 have seen much progress, and with 2010 coming these will not be the end of roadworks being part of Capetonians daily life.

The good thing is that the new road infrastructure will create lasting benefits to all of us using these roads daily.

Roadworks Main Road Muizenberg

Phase 1 of the Main road Muizenberg roadworks started on March 10.

The section of the Main affected by Phase 1 is that from about the Muizenberg Police Station to about Dalebrook Pool.

Sections of the road about 1 km long will be lifted, the services under the road renewed and the road surface replaced/renewed.

Suggested route to get to Cape Point, Kalk Bay:

Go up to the scenic Boyes Drive at either Lakeside or Muizenberg. From Boyes Drive, come back down to the main road in Clairvaux Road (self explanatory).

Turn left into the Main Road to get to Kalk Bay (Theatre) or go right to go direction Simon’s Town or Cape Point.

Another route to round Cape Point from this side is to also drive the M3 to Muizenberg, but then follow signs to Ou-Kaapse Weg at the end of the M3.

Roadworks Hospital Bend N2/M3

The R235-million roadworks on Hospital Bend are expected to cause serious delays for motorists coming into Cape Town from the southern suburbs.

This is one of the biggest roadwork projects taking place in Cape Town.

The roadworks on hospital bend started in February and is set to continue for the next 25 months to be ready on time for 2010.

These roadworks include new bridges, a widening of the existing bridge and improvements to drainage, lighting and directional signs.

Expect substantial delays taking this route during the day.

Roadworks N1 (future)

Substantial upgrades are on the cards for the N1 highway between Cape Town and Paarl.

M12 Northern Suburbs – Cape Town CBD

The City of Cape Town has officially launched the first phase of the M12 corridor which will facilitate traffic flow between Cape Town's northern suburbs and the central business district.

The first phase incorporates an extension of Bosmansdam Road in Edgemead, the quarter link to Plattekloof Road and the construction of the new bridge over Plattekloof Road which will form the main link to the M12.

The second phase entailed the construction of Bosmansdam Road between Letchworth Drive in Edgemead and the M12 corridor.

The third phase included the construction of the M12 between Bosmansdam Road and Rothschild Boulevard.

The extension of Giel Basson Drive in Monte Vista is to commence shortly.

Roadworks Khayelitsha

Oscar Mpetha Road is closed between Walter Sisulu and Tambo Roads and traffic will be diverted around the construction site on Tambo Road.

Motorists travelling from Cape Town along Walter Sisulu Road will turn left into Batandwa Ndodo Road, right into Oliver Tambo Road and then right into Steve Tshwete Road.

Residents in the area will have unhindered access to their homes. Traffic using Walter Sisulu Road to travel from the Strand in the direction of Cape Town will have to turn right into Steve Tshwete Road, left into Tambo Road and left into Batandwa Ndodo Road.

Those driving from Baden Powell Drive along Oscar Mpetha Road will turn right into Walter Sisulu Road and left into Steve Tshwete Road to use the Tambo Road detour.

These roadworks should be completed by the end of 2008.
