Airport Shuttle Planned for Cape Town Airport to City Destinations

Visitors and locals alike
will be pleased to hear that, the Cape Town International Airport may soon have an Airport shuttle service travelling from the airport along four routes to areas such as the city centre, Bellville, Kuils River and Constantia.

A tender has been put out by the Department of Transport and Public Works for the proposed Airport shuttle service, which came about after a survey, conducted in November 2007 showed that the demand for this transport service from the airport was high.

This proposed shuttle service will be run on a scheduled timetable with scheduled routes from the airport, as said in the ‘Cape Times’ on Wednesday.

There were seven possible routes proposed but not all are commercially viable.

The following shuttle routes will be put in place:

- The Cape Town route which will attract as much as 48 percent of the demand for public transport, to and from the airport. The Cape Town route will end at the V&A Waterfront with two stops in the city, one at Cape Town station and another at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

- Constantia route, Constantia Village Shopping Centre will act as a remote terminus. With stops planned for Vineyard Hotel, the Newlands Hotel and UCT's Baxter Road terminus. This route attracts about 16 percent of the total public transport demand.

- The Kuils River Route, with an 11 percent share of the demand for public transport, with stops at the new shopping centre on the corner of Stellenbosch arterial and Van Riebeeck Road and the newly completed airport shopping centre.

- The fourth route
, links the Tyger Valley shopping centre, the University of the Western Cape and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology's Bellville campus with the airport.

This proposed public transport service is not designed with the requirements of the 2010 Fifa World Cup as a specific factor, it is designed to accommodate the daily need of airport transport and the shuttle service is not the only public transport project planned for the airport;

There are plans for a
R1, 4-billion rail link between the airport and the city centre which was unveiled by the South African Rail Commuter Corporation (SARCC) last June.

SARCC, which runs Metrorail, has worked out the route of the 4km Cape Town rail link and the preferred rail route lies mainly between Modderdam and Borcherds Quarry roads before entering the Cape Town airport precinct.

Two stations would have to be built, one at the airport and a second may be built along Modderdam Road.
