The Blaauwberg Beach Hotel is Cape Town’s new 5-star, environmentally friendly establishment currently under construction in Blouberg.

Situated on the Blouberg Beachfront in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs, the new luxury hotel will have a picture perfect view of world renowned Table Mountain.

This lavish 14-storey hotel will feature 187 rooms designed by architects Otten & Louw, the new 5 star hotel is expected to be complete by 2009, in time for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Realcor Cape is the company behind the new hotel’s vision, which came about because of Blouberg’s need for an eco friendly hotel.

The environmentally conscious hotel will be using eco friendly materials, such as eco sensitive electrical generators with solar panel appliances.

Eco friendly paint and windows from recycled glass will also be used, including the addition of window overhangs and tinted windows to reduce heat and glare and thus cut down on air conditioning required.

Solar water heaters, low-flow taps and shower heads, as well as energy efficient light fittings and air conditioning systems will also be used in the hotel rooms and the hotel’s basic heating would also be derived from solar power, with a back-up generator.

Décor and finishing touches in the luxury hotel will come from recycled material. Recycled glass, paper and wood had been sourced for use in the development.

All soaps and detergents for cleaning the rooms in the hotel will be bio-degradable. Carpeting and linen at the Blaauwberg hotel will be made from 100% natural fibres and the hotel restaurant will serve organic food.

The spa will make use of natural South African herbal products and even the swimming pool will use ozone, which is effective in killing bacteria, as opposed to chlorine.

Obviously all guests will have continuous, uninterrupted access to commodities such as electricity and warm water.

"For too long the environment has taken a backseat when it comes to construction in South Africa, and the country has lagged behind most of the developed world when it comes to matters of the environment. Our policy at Realcor is to try and give something back to the community without harming the environment," said Realcor Cape MD Deonette De Ridder.
