aFREAKa Clothing: Online Shop and Outlet Store

This proudly Capetonian brand offers top quality fun and trendy onesies and other streetwear gear

It all began in 2011 with a black cat. In fact, it was a black cat animal costume. The same costume that later became known as The Black Cat Animal Onesie.

Worn by Ole Ohm – now the founder and creative mind behind aFREAKa Clothing, then a slightly zany German traveller – this black cat onesie journeyed across South Africa. From driving and shopping to fishing and hiking, Ole toured across the rainbow nation wearing his animal onesie – never did he take it off and not once did its warmth, practicality and comfort fail to impress him.

At first, Ole was surprised by the interest he received from observers who were not only intrigued by his unique one-piece suit, but also wanted to know where they could purchase such an item. Realising he was onto something; Ole took the initiative and brought the onesie revolution to South Africa founding aFREAKa Clothing in the Mother City as a premium onesie supplier.

Now operating both as an online shop – they offer FREE shipping nationwide – and as a retail store in Gardens at Canterbury Studios, aFREAKa offers the largest range of onesies in South Africa selling and delivering their products to anyone, anywhere in the country (and even the world!)

With a key focus on excellence and authenticity, each aFREAKa onesie is designed and produced locally using only the highest quality material available. Furthermore, each one-piece suit is handmade ensuing that no two onesies will ever be identical and is therefore 100% unique and true to its owner.

Believing in the philosophy that everybody should be whatever (or whoever) they want to be – even if it is for a short while – aFREAKa offers their clients the rare opportunity to explore that notion and discover their inner freak. “Wearing one of my onesies can change your life. It is quite an experience because people look at you differently. Some think you’re crazy, others think you are cute but at least everyone is smiling because there is a little freak inside of each of us,” explains Ole.

There are two different types of aFREAKa onesies to choose from: The fun and animated Animal and Character-inspired Onesie and the colourful and sporty INYE Onesie.

aFREAKa’s Animal Onesies are made from top quality polar fleece – the fleece material will never stretch nor machine wash spoil – making them super comfortable and easy to wear. Practical and stylish, the animal onesies are designed to be worn by people of all ages (adults and kids) and are finished with front stud buttons and side pockets. With over 80 different animal – think chickens, cats, elephants, lions as well as character-inspired onesies like the ‘Blue Donkey’ inspired by Eeyore and the ‘Doberman’ inspired by Scooby Doo, to name but a few, to choose from – there is a onesie designed for everyone!

Realising though that the animal suits may not meet everyone’s onesie taste buds, aFREAKa developed their INYE – which means ‘one’ in Xhosa – range. These more fitted and sporty onesies come in all colours and sizes (for adults and kids) and are made from 100% cotton making them extra toasty and comfy. Compete with a full-body zipper and front kangaroo pouch-style pockets; there are a total of 20 different INYE designs to choose from.

What’s more, if you can’t find your favourite TV character or superhero in the mix, or perhaps the INYE onesies aren’t designed using your favourite colours, don’t stress! Customers are more than welcome to send in ideas and pictures and have custom-made onesies designed just for them. Not to mention, all onesies can also be personalised and embroidered with whatever you want (ideal for gifts!) As Ole says, “Anything goes. That is what we tell everyone.”

In addition to their extensive onesie range – and for those who may relate to the aFREAKa philosophy, but not so much the onesie – aFREAKa also offers a wide range of stylish streetwear products. Items include animal hats, Flexfit & Yupoong caps, jerseys, unisex tracksuit pants and vests and tank tops all embroidered or printed with the aFREAKa name or logo.

Camping Trips
Ideal for keeping warm at night while camping outdoors, your aFREAKa onesie will definitely come in handy next time you brave sleeping outside. Imagine curling up next to the campfire in your suit while sipping on a cup of hot chocolate – utter bliss! (Tip: If you do get a little hot, take the top half of your onesie off and tie the arms around your waist. When you feel cool again, untie the arms and zip it up again.)

Open-Air Cinemas
Outdoor movies are seriously a thing now and so should the onesie when attending such events. As previously mentioned, not only are they comfortable and practical, but they will keep you snug as a bug throughout the movie. What’s more, you won’t need to lug millions of jackets, scarves, hoodies, gloves and blankets for ‘just in case’ as your aFREAKa onesie is exactly all that in one!

At Home
Sometimes there is nothing better than just relaxing at home on the couch or in bed and now you can do so while wearing your aFREAKa onesie. Better yet, buy you and your partner matching his-and-her onesies like the blue and pink elephants, or opposite suits like the ginger cat and grey mouse – it will take snuggling on the couch to a whole new level (erm, role play, anyone?)
NOTE:  aFREAKa Clothing items can also be found at selected festivals, Cape Town shops and markets.
