The Pole Project gives you A Feast of Flight 2017 – Alistair in Wonderland

Watch in awe as pole dancing gets taken to new heights in the theatre

Pole dancing may be the last thing you expect to see in theatre, but The Pole Project is about to change that. The local pole dancing studio has made waves in Cape Town and has shattered all previously held ideas about this sexy form of dance. It will continue to do so with its onstage production, A Feast of Flight - Alistair in Wonderland, a play featuring talented performers on poles. Come down and see the impressive physical feats, paired with acting, for yourself on Friday, 28 and Saturday, 29 July 2017 at 7pm, at the Nassau Centre in Newlands. This is brought to you by both the students and instructors of The Pole Project in a collaboration with the Scar-Lit Box, a pole dance studio based in Claremont.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that pole dancing fits with theatre performances. After all, acrobatic performances and dancing have long been a mainstream form of theatre. The sheer strength and performativity that is required for pole dancing cannot be overlooked. The Pole Project studio treats it as an art form. The instructors teach the students to dance in a way that often appears like the dancers are suspended in the air, sometimes in pairs.

A Feast of Flight creates a breathtaking atmosphere, with high-quality choreography and colourful characters out of the beloved classics, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There. The storyline goes along that of the three novels by Lewis Carroll, with a few differences- for one thing, the lead character is male (the reason that Alistair, and not Alice, is in Wonderland). Kathy Lee, the owner of The Pole Project and producer of A Feast of Flight explains that the choice to have a man playing the lead was made to challenge stereotypes about pole dancing being only for women. Curiouser and curiouser...

Prepare for eye-popping costumes along with the awe-inspiring dance acts you will see during the journey you will be taken on. Experience a contemporary take on the classic tale you know and love. What is more, prepare to be inspired by this production; you may want to start booking yourself some pole dancing lessons afterwards!
