What is the history and meaning of Women's Day? Women’s Day celebrates our women in South Africa as this day commemorates 9 August 1956 when women participating in a national march petitioned against pass laws. This was legislation that required African persons to carry a document on them to ‘prove’ that they were allowed to enter a ‘white area’.
Of course Women’s day celebrations in South Africa are taking place in many places. Below some of the events happening in and around Cape Town before or on Women's Day:
4th August also the Cape Town WOW Butterfly Ball at the Southern Sun Cape Sun Hotel in Cape Town. The Butterfly Ball is an evening of black tie and ball-gowns, entertainment, dining, fine wine and dancing. The evening is a dedicated charity fundraiser in aid of Lelieblom House.
National Women's Day Celebrations in Cape Town’s V & A Waterfront on 9th August is a tribute to the achievements women everywhere. The celebration in the V&A Waterfront includes performances by Cape Town's top female performers.
Some of the Women’s day celebrations in Cape Town are Fund raisers for example the fundraiser event for Women’s day in Somerset West at Somerset College & the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West from 8am.
South Africa's Woman's Day is also the start of the Hout Bay Seafood Festival & Snoek Derby.
