Music and Art take centre stage at Encounters Documentary Film Festival 2009

With over 14 of the 40 documentary films submitted to the 2009 Encounters Film Festival concentrating on music, the arts and celebrity - it’s safe to say that this year’s documentary film festival has a close eye on the goings on in the entertainment world.

Now in its 11th year, the popular South African documentary film festival continues to bring the best local and international documentary films to South African audiences.

The film festival showcases around 40 local and international films each year. With a 50/50 split of international and South African documentary films the festival is a good indication of the filmmaking talent both in South Africa and aboard.

The festival’s films fall into numerous categories – with films often presenting more than one theme and overlapping into more than one category. This year music and the arts emerges as a strong theme at the 2009 Encounters Festival.

Films like Dawn Matthews, HHP, and Tyson explore the identity and personal lives of entertainers and show the human side of the people idolised by so society.

The edgier side of the entertainment world is explored through films like Fokofpolisiekar: “Forgive them for they know not what they do”, which puts a spotlight on Afrikaans Punk Rock and the role it plays in constructing a post-Apartheid Afrikaaner identity.

For those who want to experience music in its purest form, the festival offers RIP – A Remix Manifesto and Music from the inside out. Both films explore the essence of music and what it means to make music.

With a selection of music and art themed documentary films there will be plenty to keep the art enthusiasts busy at the 2009 Encounters Documentary Film Festival.
