Making it up With Wayne Brady Live in South Africa

We join stand-up comedian Wayne Brady live in Cape Town

You can feel the buzz in the air as a group of Capetonians gather in anticipation in the intimate 567 Cape Talk Radio broadcast studio. All around excited whispers can be heard – everyone is talking about the man of the hour: US comedian Wayne Brady.

Brady, in South Africa for five live performances of his stand-up comedy show Making it Up, is about to make an appearance on local comedian Solly Philander’s lunch-time show, and this group of Cape Town fans wouldn’t have missed this for the world.

After days of clouds and rain the sun has made a rare appearance in Cape Town on this autumn Friday afternoon. Outside Capetonians are eagerly soaking up the sun before it disappears again. But these Capetonians are interested in something much more exciting than a sunny autumn day.

For South African’s who grew up watching his hilarious antics on popular improvisational comedy show Whose Line is it Anyway, seeing Wayne Brady live in South Africa is a treat of a lifetime.

Taking his seat on stage Brady looks strikingly handsome in black suit pants, a white shirt and matching black waistcoat.

He greets the audience with his killer-watt smile and within seconds you’re reminded of why he’s loved by audiences the world over. Brady’s warmth, humble nature, and unmistakable charm allow him to capture the hearts and ears of his audience from the get-go, and today is no different.

The intimate live appearance shows Brady is as talented as they come. As the host of popular US game show Don’t Forget the Lyrics, Wayne Brady is known for his singing prowess and his uncanny ability to create side-splitting musical comedy from a simple melody.

It simply wouldn’t be a Wayne Brady show without a little song and dance and in true Brady fashion we are treated to a live rap performance and a soulful rendition of Stevie Wonder’s All I Do taken off Wayne Brady’s debut album, A Long Time Coming.

It’s been an hour and the audience hasn’t stopped laughing once and it’s clear why Brady says that performing is his “thing.” Wayne is quick to point out that when you watch him you can see the passion in his performance.

“There’s a lot I’m not good at,” he said, “But I’m good at this. All my energy goes into making myself better every time … into making my audience happy.”

After two spectacular shows in Cape Town over the weekend, and three more to follow in Johannesburg on 5, 6, and 7 June, the comedian has already got audiences begging for his return. Luckily for us the comedic dynamo has fallen in love with our beautiful mother city.

Brady gushed about Cape Town saying; “Everyone has been so wonderful and warm … there’s an ease about your city that you won’t find anywhere else and I thank you for making me feel at home.” Wayne, all we can say is; “Ya’ll come back now ya hear!”
